Roman shades are a type of window covering used to block out the sun.

Roman shades are different from standard window shade in that they stack up evenly when being opened; however, when they are open they are visibly smooth, not bumpy or ribbed like typical vertical shades or blinds.

Roman shades are usually opened with a cord mechanism, allowing the user to adjust the height of the covered area. In typical construction, cords run vertically on the outdoor side of the blind running through evenly spaced horizontal stiffener rods or eyelets, and attached at the bottom of the blind.

In this case, the opened portion of the blinds remains smooth, while the bottom will be stacked evenly.

Unlike horizontal blinds, vertical blinds are less likely to collect dust because they stand vertically. Since they draw to the side rather than lifting and lowering, they are easier and faster to operate.

They operate better on doors and windows that also slide from side to side. In the 1970s there were few choices of fabric- usually beige or white, which had to have stiffener embedded to prevent fraying, rather like on roller blinds fabric but using a thicker textile.

Vertical blinds became available in flat plastic (PVC), fabric, embossed PVC, faux wood materials, metal, wood and also S-curved slats. A more modern modification is to offer them with woodtrim at top and bottom- sometimes midway as well- and these are usually described as 'Japanese Vertical blinds' because they are often co-ordinated with Japanese style Shoji blinds using the same timber.

Stationary vertical blinds are hung in the doorways of some homes and businesses which generally leave the door open. Movement of the blind may signal a change in air flow, or someone entering the doorway.

Pleated blinds are shades made from a pleated fabric (which helps to add texture to a room) that pull up to sit flat at the top of a window to hide from sight when open.

Mini blinds is a type of horizontal window blind made of long, narrow slats held together by string.

Its slats are less than half the width of a regular venetian blind, and are often made of aluminium, measuring 15 millimetres (0.59 in) or 25 millimetres (0.98 in).
